About this experience
On a thematic walking tour through old Dubrovnik, you will learn about the development of the Jewish community in the city and how the residents of the Jewish ghetto lived from its foundation to the present day. We will stroll through ancient streets, visit one of the oldest synagogues in Europe, and dive deeper into the history and culture of Dubrovnik.
What to Expect
Life of the Jewish Community in Dubrovnik
You will see the main attractions related to the life of the Jewish community - the only community of non-Catholics in Dubrovnik that was allowed permanent residence within the fortress walls of the old city. We will visit one of the oldest functioning synagogues in Europe, as well as a museum with an excellent collection of religious artifacts. I will tell you about the first Jewish refugees who settled in Dubrovnik, share the history of the transfer of the old Jewish cemetery. You will learn about the lives of Jews in Dubrovnik during World War II and the size of the community today.
Histories of the Jewish Ghetto
We will walk along the street where the Jewish ghetto was located, talk about its emergence and the rules of behavior for Jews established by the Dubrovnik Republic. You will learn about the special signs in clothing that ghetto residents had to wear, who was not allowed to work in Jewish families. I will explain why some windows were bricked up in the houses of Jews living outside the fortress walls, and we will discuss how and when this whole story ended.
