About this experience
Locals say that Montserrat is the heart of Catalonia. Boldly, I would say that in Poblet you can feel the tremor of its soul. In the oldest monastery of the 'Cistercian Triangle,' you will hear about the nearly thousand-year history of the monastery and the mausoleum of the rulers of Aragon. You will also find out who the White Monks are and touch the calm flow of their eremitic life.
What to Expect
Power, severity, and grandeur
As if by the wave of a monk's staff, from the first minutes, Santa Maria de Poblet impresses with its monumentality and indescribable atmosphere of deep antiquity. You will learn about the ancient history of the monastery, standing secluded in the valley of the Francolí River as the first of the three abbeys forming the 'Cistercian Triangle.' A leisurely stroll through numerous corridors, vaulted galleries, and corridors will allow you to fully experience the holiness and spirit of seclusion. Walking through well-kept squares and paths, you will learn about the dreadful times of the 19th century when the monastery was looted, witnessed the horrors of the Spanish Revolution and Civil War, was destroyed, and partially burned. And, of course, you will see the royal tombs of Poblet, which were worked on by the best sculptors of that time.
Stories about the Cistercian Order
Walking through dark corridors, you will notice the almost complete absence of valuable utensils, paintings, and rich interiors – this is explained by the adherence to ascetic style by the Cistercians, whose churches became a model of ascetic architecture. I will tell you more about the origin of the monastic order, which branched off from the Benedictines. I will explain their approach to the spiritual path in Catholicism. You will also learn, thanks to which agricultural inventions and methods, as well as innovations in cheese making and viticulture, they were called the greatest agronomists of their time. And, moreover, you will see modern White Monks, as the monastery is still active, and about 40 novices live here.
Details of the Poblet Monastery
Above the gates of Abbot Lérida, you will see the image of the Virgin Mary, to whom the monastery is dedicated. I will tell you why the sculptor and creator of the magnificent alabaster altar never received final payment for his work. I will lead you to a beautiful gazebo with a fountain for ablutions, a strict but harmonious abbey church, and the monastic refectory in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. You will also discover a beautiful view of the patio from the terrace and, if desired, visit the monastery museum.
