About this experience
If you're in Bali, the trip to Mount Ijen is an experience not to be missed. Located on the eastern part of Java island, this volcano is known for its stunningly beautiful sulfuric lake in its crater. Accompanied by a local volcanologist, you will embark on a journey to Ijen and undoubtedly spend one of the most unique and beautiful nights of your life. The surreal landscapes around you will complement your impressions of Bali, so diverse, vibrant, and unexpected.
What to expect
Journey to the volcano
In Bali, at 9:00 PM, I will meet you at the hotel and head to the west of Bali, to Gilimanuk port. Along the way, I will tell you about the traditions and way of life of the Balinese people, as well as about the local culture and religion. Next, you will take a ferry to the eastern part of Java island, where the famous volcano is located. After the crossing, a driver will be waiting for you in a jeep to continue the rest of the tour. Before the ascent, you will have time to rest at the base camp, and at 4 AM, you will start the ascent to Ijen with a local guide along a wide road lit by lanterns. Along the way, you will encounter sulfur porters who struggle to carry their hundred-kilogram loads to sell for 10 cents per kilogram, and you will learn about the complex sulfur mining process that takes place in the volcano's crater.
Night and sunrise at Ijen
The guide will tell you about the features of the volcanic complex. At nighttime, the breathtaking views are hard to describe in words; it's a spectacle worthy of science fiction: the glow of billions of stars, extraordinary blue flames, and a huge moon... Until 8 AM, you will be inside the volcano's crater to witness the sunrise.
World's largest acid lake
After witnessing the sunrise, you will explore the world's largest acid lake. Nearby, you can have a snack and explore the surroundings in daylight: the surreal landscape of the volcano's vicinity, brightly yellow sulfur deposits, rocky crevices, clay, sand, gas clouds dispersed in the atmosphere - all of this will literally transport you to another planet called Kawah Ijen.
