Spending a night on the smoking summit of Mount Ijen means immersing yourself in the natural magic of Indonesia. Located in the heart of Java, you will walk among brightly yellow sulfur rocks, see streams of glowing blue lava, and witness the sunrise by the acidic lake. Along the way, you will hear interesting facts about the locals and uncover the natural secrets of Mount Ijen.
What to Expect
A Journey to the Heart of Java
Serpentine roads disappearing into jungles, lush coffee plantations, unique villages, and smoking volcano peaks above green valleys—this is the fairytale Java that awaits you. After crossing by ferry, we will head to the base of Mount Ijen. Along the way, I will share little-known facts about Balinese culture, help you understand the local way of life and religion, and of course, talk about the nature of Indonesia.
Trekking to the Crater of the Volcano
Next, you will embark on a trek to the unique Kawah Ijen Lake: our path will take us through stratovolcanoes, craters, smoke clubs, and brightly yellow rocks. A couple of hours of moderate ascent and you will be on the shore of a turquoise lake filled with 60-degree sulfuric acid. You will see whimsical sulfur formations, learn about sulfur mining by the locals, and marvel at the landscapes of the world's largest acidic lake.
Night Lights of Ijen
The most impressive views of Ijen will greet you at sunset, when the liquid sulfur of the volcano begins to glow in the darkness with unearthly blue and blue shades. You will witness the mystical phenomenon known as 'blue lava', learn about its origins, and take photos that every traveler dreams of when on Java.
Organizational Details
The excursion price includes transportation expenses (minivan or bus with air conditioning, ferry to Java island), ticket to the volcano, drinking water. Additionally, breakfast is the only extra expense payable upon request.
How the Excursion Goes
- We depart from the hotel around 7:00 PM, the journey to the foot of Mount Ijen will take about 6 hours
- The ascent to the volcano's crater will begin at 2:00 AM and will take about 2.5 hours
- We descend back to the base around 8:00 AM, return to Bali around 3:00 PM
