About this experience
On a friendly walk through two vibrant districts, Baixa and Alfama, you will trace the path of Portuguese kings, learn about the upheavals of the Middle Ages, visit the birthplace of fado, and hear about local wonders. You will also discover the history of ancient Roman sauce, taste ginginha and traditional sweets in the most 'correct' spots of Lisbon.
What to Expect
Baixa: stroll through the waves of history
On the main squares of Lisbon, located in this elegant neighborhood, you will hear ancient tales about the city's foundation and its rich history. While strolling through the spacious Restauradores, Rossio, and Commerce squares, I will talk about the restoration of the monarchy and the fires of the inquisition, the terrible Jewish pogrom, and the devastating earthquake of 1755. Near the monuments to Portuguese kings and ordinary workers, we will discuss the famous and unknown people who created the unique Lisbon.
Alfama Heritage
Then you will head to one of the city's oldest districts, where traces of Moorish rule have been preserved, and in small restaurants and tasquinhas (traditional eateries), as it used to be, soulful and touching fado is performed. You will learn about St. Anthony of Padua, a local favorite born here in the 12th century, known for his preaching and miracles. You will learn the history of the Cathedral of Se, which looks more like a defensive stronghold, and the legend of the two black crows. We will talk about the conquest of Lisbon by the first Portuguese king and the legend of the famous knight after whom one of the squares is named. From the viewpoints of Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol, you will discover amazing views of the city and try to unravel the secret of the unique phenomenon known as the 'Light of Lisbon.'
Ancient sauce and Lisbon delicacies
Descending the steep steps of Alfama to the waterfront, you will peek into a former ancient Roman 'factory' for the production of a fish sauce that was in high demand throughout the Roman Empire. Also, throughout the day, I will show you excellent places where you can taste traditional Portuguese sweets, cod croquettes, and appreciate cherry liqueur - ginginha. At the end of the walk, I will provide some useful recommendations to help you have a great time in Portugal.
