About this experience
Mumbai is a mecca for hundreds of thousands of people who arrive daily with hopes of starring in Bollywood films. It is a city with luxurious Victorian architecture and very diverse residential neighborhoods: from slums to modern houses. Moreover, it is here that the cult novel 'Shantaram' is set. You will see the places related to it and other city attractions.
What to Expect
Mumbai: English Past, Luxury and Slums
You will discover a very diverse city: magnificent, shocking, fabulous, and mysterious. The tour program includes:
- Victoria Terminus - you will admire the old terminus in Victorian style, which took 10 years to build.
- Supreme Court - we will visit the palace built in colonial times. I will show you towers with spires, stone carvings, and a relief with a one-eyed monkey holding the scales of justice.
- Colaba District - the setting of the main events in the book 'Shantaram'. Since ancient times, European newcomers settled here. You will see the legendary Leopold Cafe and enjoy views of the Arabian Sea.
- Gateway of India - you will appreciate the Triumphal Arch depicted on all postcards. I will tell you who and why left the city through it in 1947.
- Taj Mahal Hotel - I will show you the most expensive and popular hotel in Mumbai.
- Mahalakshmi Dhobi Ghat - we will visit the open-air laundry occupying a whole block. Here, hereditary washermen work: clothes for washing are brought to them from all over Mumbai.
- Dharavi Slums - another place showcasing India as it is. These are the largest slums in the world, where the rent does not exceed $4 a month. It is here that Rukhmanbai lived, endowing the main character of 'Shantaram' with an Indian name.
