About this experience
Shamakhi has endured many dramatic events. Its stones remember earthquakes, invasions, fires, battles. But no matter how many trials there were, it rose from the ashes each time. You will learn the main highlights of the history of a 2000-year-old city, see a medieval fortress, one of the country's largest mosques, and iconic mausoleums. You will also visit a Soviet observatory and uncover the secrets of the local wine.
What to Expect
Diri Baba Mausoleum
The tour starts with the main attraction of Shamakhi - the impregnable mausoleum. The powerful walls of this mausoleum once shielded the Shamakhi people from enemy invasions. To this day, the walls of the mausoleum, suspended above the ground in a grotto, impress the imagination, and its interior design amazes with practicality and ingenuity.
Shirvan Shahs' Mausoleum
After exploring the mausoleum, you will visit the Shirvan Shahs' Mausoleum - the mausoleum known as the "Seven Tombs," named after the number of buried rulers.
Juma Mosque
And, of course, I will introduce you to one of the largest, most majestic, and ancient mosques in Azerbaijan - the 8th-century Juma Mosque. You will hear about its construction history and learn about its architectural features.
Pirgulu Reserve
Next, we will head to a picturesque location situated at an altitude of 1400 meters. You will discover the treasures of the reserve - its relic flora, rich forests, and animals, including rare species such as bison.
Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory
In 1960, one of the most significant observatories in the USSR was opened in Pirgulu. You will appreciate how harmoniously it fits into the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. You will step inside the facility and see a meteorite weighing several tens of kilograms.
Winery
Finally, you will visit a winery, where you will observe the stages of production and see how the drink is stored in one of the country's largest cellars. The tour includes a walk through the winery and a tasting. And if you get hungry, you will be treated to dishes of the local cuisine made from environmentally friendly products. Lunch with a magnificent view of the Caucasus Mountains will be a wonderful conclusion to the trip.
