About this experience
The old town, located on a limestone plateau, is full of rare historical buildings: ancient houses, palaces, narrow streets paved with stone slabs. I offer you to explore these and other charms of the city, as well as its history and legends, on a guided walk.
Founded in 545 BC, Monopoli is now one of the most popular resorts on the coast of Apulia, firstly, it is a long-established resort town, secondly, it is close to Bari and Alberobello and it is convenient to stay here if you want to explore the surroundings.
Itinerary
- The tour starts from the oldest entrance to the city - Porta Vecchia. We will walk through the ancient streets of this city and immerse ourselves in the Middle Ages. You will learn about the legend of the icon of the Madonna della Madia, the patroness of the city of Monopoli. In her honor, a cathedral of amazing beauty was built - in the Baroque style made of colored marble.
- We will stroll along the city's waterfront, see the tower built by Carlo V, the inner halls of which host exhibitions, concerts, and theatrical performances; the church of St. Stephen, which was built by a pirate as a sign of gratitude for salvation; a small church of St. Vito, where there is a canvas depicting the saint; the purgatorial church, where the mummified body of one of the bishops of the city is located; the defensive wall; the open-air artillery museum and the craftsman's workshop.
