About this experience
From Moscow to the ancient city in the Tver region - only 130 km, but here you will find yourself in the world of real provincial Russia. This world is full of pleasant surprises, and modernism in Kimry is one of them. During the walk, I will introduce you to examples of a style that continued to play in the city after it went out of fashion with bright colors of wooden carving and pre-revolutionary merchant motifs.
What to Expect
Architectural heritage of the historical center
Walking along Fadeeva Street, the Volga embankment, and Theater Square, you will hear a short story about the history of the village of Kimry and the emergence of the shoe industry in one of the 'shoe capitals' of Russia. You will learn about the layout of the streets and the city plan, examine old photographs. And on Uritskogo, Kirova, and Vagzhanova streets, you will explore the historical buildings with mansions and houses in the styles of eclecticism, modernism, neoclassicism, and neo-grec. And be sure to stop by the colorful little house-teremok of Luzhin.
Zarechye: monuments of the Ascension side
After a small circular route in the center, we will head to the bridge over the Kimrka River, a tributary of the Volga. You will see a symbolic meeting of the old pre-revolutionary modernist (merchant Teplow's house) and the new Soviet (doctor Zhardetsky's house). On the other side, you will walk along Ordzhonikidze Street, where I will show you the oldest building in the city, the Ascension Church, and introduce you to the wooden buildings in the modernist style of the 1920s. And on the parallel Moscow Street, rich in historical monuments, you will see houses from the NEP era, many of which also have elements of Art Nouveau.
