About this experience
Kandy is the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and one of the most important cities in Sri Lanka. You will see the picturesque artificial lake and visit the ancient Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic located right on the shore. Additionally, we will visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and the stunning Botanical Garden, where hundreds of local plants and trees are collected.
What to expect
Kandy and surroundings
We will visit an ancient Buddhist temple, stroll through the gigantic botanical garden, and meet the charming Sri Lankan elephants. The tour program includes:
- Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - the main attraction of Kandy. You will learn the history of the sacred relic and explore the magnificent temple complex with carved wooden decorations, painted ceilings, and doors adorned with silver and ivory. We will tell you about one of the most colorful processions in the East - Esala Perahera - and share the legend of Princess Hemamala's hair.
- Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage - a place where orphaned elephant calves are brought. They are raised here and then sent to zoos in different countries or trained to work. You will hear the history of the orphanage and, if you are lucky, observe the process of feeding the baby elephants.
- Royal Botanical Garden - one of the best parks in South Asia. You will walk along the Avenue of Memorial Trees, see more than a hundred species of palms, a collection of indoor plants, and decorative orchids. And we will reveal how Nicholas II and Yuri Gagarin are connected to the Sri Lankan park.
