What to Expect
Sultanahmet
We will start at the main arena of the Byzantine Empire - the Hippodrome Square. It was the main venue of Constantinople, like the Colosseum in Rome, and the heart of the entire city.
Hagia Sophia
Next, we will visit the Hagia Sophia Cathedral - a loud echo of Byzantium. It was the most magnificent Christian church on the planet for over a thousand years. It influenced the entire Christian world for centuries. Here were the coronations of Byzantine emperors, ecumenical councils, riots, rebellions, and uprisings.
Basilica Cistern
Then we will descend into the underground world of great Byzantium - the Basilica Cistern. This is one of the most magnificent water reservoirs in the world. It is little like a water reservoir, more like a luxurious underground palace. Here are 336 columns from pagan temples, and the image of the Medusa Gorgon adds a special mystique to the place.
By the way, many movies are filmed in the Basilica - for example, the events of the thriller 'Inferno' took place here.
Little Hagia Sophia
Finally, we will visit the Little Hagia Sophia - one of the oldest preserved churches in Istanbul. Its capitals are adorned with the initials of the imperial family - Justinian and Theodora. This building served as a prototype for the Hagia Sophia Cathedral.
