About this experience
Get ready to find yourself in the Byzantine Empire - I will guide you through the paths of its past, help you envision its greatness. You will 'read' the history of Hagia Sophia through frescoes, explore the obelisks of the Hippodrome square, learn about the underground reservoirs, and the life in Constantinople. You'll hear the secrets of beautiful mosaics. In the end, you will witness the days of Byzantium's rise and fall - and discover its influence on world history and culture.
What to Expect
The legacy of the Holy Byzantium
We will start the tour unhurriedly, from the origins - my story will immerse you in the times of the birth of the Byzantine Empire. You will learn about the prerequisites of this event, about the arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the city, about the baptism of Russian princes, and how Emperor Constantine became a Christian. Let's talk about the empire's heyday and decline: you will understand what led to the death of Constantinople and why two religions peacefully coexist on the shores of the Bosporus.
Main sights of Constantinople
In 4 hours, you will get acquainted with the key witnesses of the Byzantine Empire, studying monuments from the outside and inside. In addition, you will encounter numerous frescoes from the wealthiest period of Constantinople and mosaic panels revealing events and legends of the past.
- Hippodrome Square: I will help you grasp the scale and grandeur of this structure and tell you about the purpose of its construction. You will decipher the inscriptions on the obelisks, learn about the death of 30,000 residents, and be amazed by the strength of women and the weakness of some men.
- Hagia Sophia Cathedral, or Hagia Sophia, which mesmerizes anyone who touches the ancient walls. The story will cover the construction of the temple, how architect Sinan managed to save it from destruction, and we will also discover hidden signs of emperors.
- Basilica Cistern - an underground strategic facility where water was stored for the palace of the Constantinople emperors during long enemy sieges.
