About this experience
Gruyere boasts a stunning concentration of medieval architecture. However, there is no feeling of lifelessness of a museum; on the contrary, you feel like you are in a real ancient Switzerland, where cowbells ring against the backdrop of green meadows and mountain landscapes scented with aromatic cheese. And this picture will come to life before you on our tour!
What to Expect
- A walk around the 13th-century Chateau de Gruyere. This is a short hike of 1.5 km with Swiss views of the Pre-Alps and green valleys.
- The Gruyere Cheese Dairy. Here you will see (and taste) how the famous Gruyere cheese is made, and also receive 3 pieces of different varieties to sample.
- The HR Giger Bar. This is a museum bar designed by the famous designer Hans Giger - the creator of the imagery for the film 'Alien'.
- Lunch (optional). If you wish, I will reserve a table for you in a restaurant for you to try the local famous fondue on the terrace with stunning views.
You will learn:
- How cheese originated in Switzerland
- The role of cheese production in the Middle Ages and its significance today
- How the town of Gruyere appeared and what its relationships were in the Middle Ages with the current ‘capital’ of Switzerland - Bern
- What is the 'black-black hand' living in Chateau de Gruyere
