What to Expect
Evolution of creativity - from Holland to France
The Van Gogh Museum boasts the world's largest collection of the artist's works. With over 200 paintings, 500 drawings and sketches, and around a thousand letters, we will delve into the key pieces! You will discover the story of Van Gogh, from his beginnings in Holland to his time in France. The chronologically curated exhibition allows us to examine each of the five periods of the artist's life and work: Netherlands, Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy, and Auvers-sur-Oise. Additionally, in the museum, you will encounter works by equally renowned contemporaries of Van Gogh, collected by the artist himself. Paintings by Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Monet, Manet, Signac, and Pissarro will not only trace the development of Van Gogh's style but also compare his artworks with those who inspired him and drew inspiration from his work.
Unraveling Van Gogh's personality through his paintings
In two hours, you will witness the entire life of the artist - with its highs, lows, and extreme states that found reflection in his iconic canvases. You will understand why Van Gogh’s paintings vary dramatically in mood and color scheme: from dark Dutch sketches to the 'symphony of light' - the everlasting Sunflowers. We will discuss the numerous self-portraits of Van Gogh, his time spent in southern France, and why he painted 'The Blossoming Almond Branch'. Masterpieces like 'The Potato Eaters' and 'The Bedroom,' quotes from his letters, and audio fragments will answer questions about the artist better than any book.
