About this experience
The Gobelins Quarter is next in line for immortality, following in the footsteps of Montmartre, Montparnasse, and Marais. Here, like in a sanctuary, remains that alluring, lively Paris from Anna Gavalda's novels with its aperitifs on terraces, communal gardens, and neighborly barbecues that educated tourists seek but cannot find.
What to Expect
A Sequence of "Mosts"
In addition to the world-famous tapestry manufactory that made the name Gobelins synonymous, in this neighborhood you'll find many other "mosts": the oldest castle within the city limits, the very first residential skyscraper, the most cinematic square, the most ambitious architectural project, the shortest street in Paris… By the way, the word "Paris" was first discovered by archaeologists here, during excavations of one of the necropolises.
Engaging Tale of a Secret River
Enclosed in the Parisian underground, the Bievre River is a fetish for historians, archaeologists, and urban explorers. Legends abound around it, and along the line traced by its channel on the capital's map, historical workshops of artists and craftsmen have been established. We will explore the fragment of it chosen by dyers, laundresses, leatherworkers, and even circus performers. We will remember the "courts of wonders," underground chapels, lively cabarets, and peculiar professions that vanished in the annals of History.
Diversity of Architectural Styles
Classic Ottoman buildings juxtapose rare examples of Gothic surviving the Ottomans and Constructivism that never gained popularity in the City of the Unfulfilled Tomorrow.
Peaceful Atmosphere
Intellectual elite embraced the Gobelins - families of scholars, writers, researchers, doctors, teachers, professors from the Sorbonne. Leftist sentiments are honored here, marked by tolerance and the ideas of the "flower children." Every house must have an artist, and classical music can be heard in inner courtyards. In cafes, be prepared to engage in a conversation about the Paris Commune with a graying historian pining for kir, and it wouldn't hurt to discuss architecture and vaccination in African countries.
Enthusiastic Guide
I am an inquisitive seeker and meticulous investigator of urban myths. For me, preparing for a tour means not just gathering dates and names but writing a script, intertwining plots, and molding characters. In my area, I know every inch. Take a walk with me through these charming places, and you'll be amazed at the secrets hidden in these ordinary, at first glance, residential neighborhoods.
Route
It's noteworthy that during the Days of Cultural Heritage, when all of the city's hidden corners are open for visitation, the Gobelins rarely leave their quarter - there is so much interesting and mysterious here that years of study would not be enough. And the unfamiliarity of the names of local attractions to you is part of the plan to protect the neighborhood from an influx of tourists.
- Italy Square

- Rene Legall Square - "Monkey Island"

Organizational Details
Clarification on Cost
- Free for children under 14.
- Upon request, a "drawing module" may also be included in the tour - then it will be a walk combined with urban sketching (mostly architecture). This will, however, extend its duration and increase the cost. Details will be provided during correspondence.
Additional Expenses: None within the scope of the tour. But keep in mind that along our path, there is a wonderful cafe-patisserie, a bakery with the best raisin rolls, and an excellent restaurant where you can have lunch.
