About this experience
Turku, the port city and the first capital of Finland, amazes with its extraordinary atmosphere. It feels like time has stopped here, and on the cobblestone streets with ancient brick buildings, you can still encounter medieval inhabitants. To soak up the spirit of the city, you will visit the Cathedral, stroll through the Port Arthur district famous for its wooden buildings, and explore the castle where the Swedish royal family lived. I will help you delve into the medieval past of the city and introduce you to the daily life of Turku residents so you can better understand Finland.
What awaits you
Oh, glorious Middle Ages!
The history of the city with a long past will come alive for you in its center. You will see the Cathedral and the medieval fortress, admire the Empire-style architectural structures, and visit the Port Arthur district, famous for its wooden houses that appeared here at the beginning of the 20th century. I will explain how after the Crusades on the banks of the Aura River, Catholic temples began to appear. We will visit one of them - Turku Cathedral - to learn the history of the Catholic, and later the Lutheran cathedral.
Inside the Royal Fortress
You will visit the medieval fortress where the Swedish royal family lived. I will tell you how in those distant times, the Renaissance style prevailed in the castle interiors, lively conversations filled the large festive halls, and the court life of the duke and duchess was known throughout the kingdom. You will not just walk around the castle but get acquainted with medieval interiors and lifestyle: you will see dungeons, a ballroom, the king and queen's chambers, and the maid's bedrooms. And at the museum exhibition, you will find out what dishes the castle residents ate and what clothes and decorations they wore.
