About this experience
Port Turku - the first capital of Finland - amazes with an extraordinary atmosphere. It seems that time has stopped here, and on the cobbled streets with old brick buildings, you can still meet medieval residents. To imbue the spirit of the city, you will visit the Cathedral, walk around the Port Arthur district famous for its wooden buildings, and explore the castle where the Swedish royal family lived. I will help you understand the city's past and introduce you to the life of Turku residents so that you can better understand Finland.
What to expect
Oh, glorious Middle Ages!
The history of the city with a long past will come to life for you in its center. You will see the Cathedral and the medieval fortress, admire the architectural structures in the Empire style, and visit the Port Arthur district, famous for its wooden houses that appeared here in the early 20th century. I will explain how after the crusades on the Aura River coast, Catholic churches began to appear. We will visit one of them - the Turku Cathedral - to learn the history of the Catholic, and after the Reformation - the Lutheran cathedral.
Inside the royal fortress
You will visit a medieval fortress where the royal family of Sweden lived. I will tell you how in those distant times, the interiors of the castle were dominated by Renaissance style, conversations did not cease in the big festive halls, and the court life of the duke and duchess was known throughout the kingdom. You will not just walk around the castle, but get acquainted with the medieval interiors and way of life: see dungeons, the ballroom, the king's and queen's chambers, and the maid's rooms. And at the museum exhibition, you will figure out what dishes the castle residents ate and what costumes and jewelry they wore.
