About this experience
How to turn weakness into strength? How young and talented Estonian architects have done it. Over the past years, Tallinn has undergone significant changes. New buildings are constructed, but old industrial quarters are getting a second life. During the tour, you will visit three vibrant districts of the capital where successful projects have been implemented, uniting historical value and creative innovations.
What to Expect
Rotermann Quarter
On this walk, you will explore a district where historical buildings are as plentiful as in Old Town Tallinn. Learn how it looked in the 19th century when industrial production was established here, factories and plants were built. Imagine it in the period of neglect during the Soviet era. See the streets where some scenes of Andrei Tarkovsky's film 'Stalker' were filmed. And appreciate the result of an outstanding 2001 project that architecturally united old and new.
Noblessner
Also on our agenda is a quarter whose history began in 1912 when two St. Petersburg merchants – Emmanuil Nobel and Artur Lessner – built a secret submarine factory here. For almost a hundred years, the area remained closed off, and today, it has become a new cultural center of Tallinn.
Telliskivi
Currently, the quarter occupies 11 buildings of the former Tallinn Kalinin Electric Engineering Plant. The enterprise was once one of the most powerful in the Soviet Union, and now it is the largest art center in Estonia. Creative companies' offices are located here: educational projects, fashion ateliers, advertising agencies, restaurants, and cafes.
