About this experience
During the tour, you will not only explore the works of El Greco, but also take a walk around the city, which will help you better imagine the 'old Toledo', where the artist lived and worked for so many years. And his immortal canvases will help convey the spirit of that time, the spirit of the great Toledo.
"It is astonishing how the current appearance of the city (Toledo) coincides with the engravings of the 16th century. The view from the south, from the bypass road across the river, is one of those sights that you call up from the storehouses of memory to calm down before sleep, tracing with fading eyes the panorama: from the left, from the west, from the San Juan monastery, to the Baroque Jesuit church and the Moorish towers, to the powerful Gothic cathedral and, finally, to the Disneyland-like spiers of the Alcázar."
But even when changing the general plan to a larger one, everything remains as it was in the times of El Greco. (...) And it is then, delving into the origins of the Toledo myth, that you come to the conclusion that Toledo - the city and the legend - is El Greco".
Peter Wale. "Genius of the place".
What to expect
Walking tour of El Greco's places
It was in Toledo that the painter spent his most fruitful years. Almost all of his works are associated with this city, with specific commissions, events. And vice versa: many places in the city are associated with the artist's personal life. During this tour, we suggest you visit:
- El Greco Museum.
- Church of Saint Thomas. It is here that the painting 'The Burial of the Count of Orgaz' is kept, before which people still bow, as before a sacred relic of the church.
- And of course - Toledo Cathedral, in the sacristy of which there is a large collection of the great artist's paintings.
Additional sites
- The tour can be extended if, besides the main monuments, you wish to visit other equally interesting sites.
- Monastery of Santo Domingo el Antiguo. The altarpiece of this monastery church was one of El Greco's first commissions in Toledo. It is in this same monastery that the master was buried in the monastery crypt.
- Tavera Hospital. The decoration of the altarpiece of this hospital church was one of El Greco's last commissions.
- Santa Cruz Museum, where the works of the great artist are also exhibited.
Come, it will be interesting!
