About this experience
The Prado has been defined as "the place with the highest concentration of masterpieces per square meter." Within the museum's space, we will encounter a selection of top-quality paintings - which, in addition, reflect the personal tastes of Spanish kings, their unions, and even political enmity. I invite you to explore the pearls of the Prado together - in their artistic and historical context.
What to Expect
We will delve into 25 key masterpieces of the Prado, with each painting placed by me in its historical context. I will introduce you to the main schools of painting represented in the museum: Spanish, Dutch, Italian, German, and French.
- Works by Diego Velázquez, including "Las Meninas" ("The Ladies-in-Waiting," also known as "The Family of Philip IV") - an absolutely magical canvas with an immersion effect.
- Francisco Goya's creations - in particular, the pinturas negras, or "Black Paintings," originally adorning his country house. The patriotic work "The Third of May 1808" and "The Family of Charles IV" - classics of their genre.
- Italian painting: at the center of our attention here are Fra Angelico's "Annunciation," Jacopo Tintoretto's "The Washing of the Feet" with carefully constructed perspective, and Titian's "Emperor Charles V at Muhlbach."
- Albrecht Dürer's "Self-portrait" - the first self-portrait painted north of the Alps, no less famous than Dürer's other masterpiece, "Adam and Eve."
- Rogier van der Weyden's "Descent from the Cross" - a painting that impresses with its volume effect. It was no wonder it was Philip II's favorite picture.
- We will definitely visit my favorite Hieronymus Bosch room. His paintings illustrating human vices still look very relevant today.
I will reveal to you the history of the creation of each painting, interesting biographical facts about the characters in the canvases. And also explain:
- why Bosch's paintings were not destroyed by the Inquisition
- what tricks Minister Godoy pulled off with the "Naked Maja" in front of guests
- why the Spanish kings decided to showcase their art collections to the general public
- and much more!
