Dacha Batumi: Tales of Seaside Villas
About this experience
At the end of the 19th century, dachas began to appear in Adjara. Owners with famous surnames - Golitsyns, Baryatinsky, Sibirkovy - spared no expense in arranging them. Most of the buildings of those years have disappeared into the depths of history - but not without a trace. Let's together touch the fragments of a glorious past, see unconventional angles of the city, and eavesdrop on the secrets of famous dacha owners.
What to Expect
Batumi is a corner of the Black Sea coast that has been incredibly lucky. The city is rich not only in wild flora but also in dacha parks with rich vegetation. It is worth thanking enthusiast botanists who chose Batumi at the beginning of the 20th century to build dachas.
I will tell you about the owners of local 'resort palaces' and help you imagine the dramas that played out on winding staircases running down the hills towards the sea, and in romantic gazebos. How delightful were the long summer evenings when a warm night breeze blew towards the sea and the whole family gathered around the samovar on the open veranda. And how the cold winds of the unkind 20th century turned their plots into ruins and overgrown thickets.
During the trip from Green Cape to Tsikhisdziri, you will see dachas in the Empire style, bright examples of rational modernism and eclecticism. Now they are going through, to put it mildly, not the best times. I will tell you what changes the 21st century has brought and whether there is hope for revival.
