About this experience
Balat is a charming district of Istanbul located on the shores of the Golden Horn. It is known for its relaxed atmosphere, old houses painted in bright colors, and the close intertwining of religions: mosques, churches, and synagogues side by side. We will stroll through the picturesque streets of Balat and talk about the rich history of this area.
What to expect
History and modernity blend together in Balat, creating its unique image. We will leisurely walk through the quiet old streets, admire minarets and domes adorned with stone carvings and mosaics, discuss the elegance of architecture and historical developments that brought different faiths together in one district of Istanbul. We will visit some Christian churches and admire the synagogues from the outside.
Balat is also famous for its colorful houses painted in various shades of blue, yellow, and red. The unusual color palette makes the district particularly photogenic - make sure to have plenty of space on your phone for pictures of the colorful buildings. Additionally, there are many cozy cafes and restaurants in Balat where we can stop to relax and enjoy delicious Turkish cuisine.
