Luxembourg's rich historical past has left over a hundred castles scattered throughout the country as heritage. Some have been restored, some lie in ruins, yet this does not diminish their former grandeur and architectural value. It would take quite some time to explore all the castles in the country, so I suggest focusing on the most vibrant and spectacular ones - Bourscheid and Vianden.
What to expect
Bourscheid Castle - a gem of the Müllerthal region and the closest to Luxembourg City. The castle, which seemed more to aspire to look like a fortress rather than being one in reality. Until recently, part of the castle was residential: you will touch the history of Bourscheid through the lives of its inhabitants who preserved the castle until today. For nearly 100 years, blackcurrant liqueurs have been produced on the grounds of Bourscheid, so after the castle tour, you will be treated to a tasting of blackcurrant liqueur - the hallmark of this place.
Vianden Castle - the largest castle in the Ardennes Mountains and one of the largest preserved in Europe since the Middle Ages. The history of Vianden Castle reflects the country's history with all its collisions and vicissitudes, ups and downs. The combination of Romanesque and Gothic architecture of the castle, the natural landscape make the area where the castle is located the most picturesque place in the Grand Duchy.
