About this experience
The ancient and kind neighbor of St. Petersburg, the city of Vyborg, is actually 4 centuries older! Here you will see a unique blend reflecting the cultures of different peoples. You will see examples of Swedish, Finnish, and Russian architecture, from medieval fortifications to bourgeois houses, profitable merchant houses, and officials of tsarist Russia.
What to expect
Two hours away from St. Petersburg, and here it is - ancient Vyborg, a city by the sea with medieval Scandinavian fortress towers and chapels, narrow paved streets that remember the seven-century history of the city. In order for you to have time to admire its wonderful nature, get acquainted with the history and monuments of different eras, the tour will be done in a car-pedestrian format.
During the car trip, you will see iconic buildings of the 20th century: the houses of wealthy townspeople Massinen, Moskvin, Lagerkrantz, profitable houses of joint-stock companies Otso, Untamo, Pelikan, as well as numerous educational institutions (Repol's People's School, Finnish Girls' Gymnasium, the old Finnish Joint School, Alvar Aalto Library).
The walking tour route is laid through the streets of the Old Town. During a leisurely walk you will see the city as it was 3 centuries ago, and in some places even 5 centuries ago. You will have the opportunity to see the preserved elements of the Horned Fortress, houses of the urban commoners of medieval Vyborg and walk through the castle yard, the history of which dates back to the distant 13th century.
If desired, we can also visit Monrepos Park, which is unique with its stone ridges of the glacial period made of rapakivi granite ('rotten stone').
