About this experience
On a walk through the ancient streets of Baku's historic center, I will acquaint you with its rich history and iconic landmarks, tell you how the city developed in the Middle Ages, about the architecture and architects of the XIX-XX centuries, as well as about the cultural peculiarities and way of life of the local residents.
Program
- History. I will tell you about the founding of the city, the first settlements, the events of the 12th century when the city began to function as a capital, and about the wars. About life in the Middle Ages, trade with India, famous merchants and travelers who visited here. The meaning of the word Baku and the purpose of the city fortress, about the four religions and the oldest of them.
- Architecture. I will tell you about the architecture of the city: about outstanding buildings, why hundreds of buildings in the city were built by Polish architects and about the creations of Azerbaijani architects. Legends and stories about outstanding buildings and their owners.
- Culture. You will learn about the traditions and way of life of the local residents, about the culinary diversity of the country, about national products and crafts.
Main points of the route:
- The Old City's landmark - Maiden Tower (VIII-VII centuries BC). Disputes about its emergence and purpose continue to this day (view without visiting);
- The Palace of the Shirvanshahs - rulers of the Shirvan state with the capital in Baku (view without visiting);
- Ancient mosques, caravanserais, and hamams as a picture of medieval life in Baku;
- Architectural masterpieces of the late XIX - early XX centuries;
- The magnificent Governor's Garden adjacent to the Old City;
- Stalls of local merchants with a wide choice of souvenirs;
- The Museum of the Miniature Book (closed only on Mondays);
- The workshop of the famous artist Ali Shamsi and House with Cats;
- The market square and famous streets where scenes from the Soviet cult film 'Diamond Arm' were shot.
After the tour, which will be held in one breath, all participants will receive a gift - a tourist edition about Azerbaijan. I will also recommend you a cafe or restaurant with national cuisine and a traditional Azerbaijani tea house with Eastern sweets.
