About this experience
This walk will reveal to you the non-touristy, off-the-beaten-path Chania from its unconventional perspectives. I will unfold the stories and secrets of the city, help you recognize echoes of the Venetian and Ottoman eras in Chania's architecture. You will feel the atmosphere of the Old Town, and at the end, enjoy a magnificent sunset from the viewing platform of the Egyptian Lighthouse in the port of the most beautiful city in Crete.
What to expect
Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Chania
In the beginning of the tour, we will stroll through modern districts of Chania where you will get a full sense of the local life's pace and Cretan charm, wandering among charming cafes and restaurants. In the Old Town's territories, we will dive into narrow streets – into their history and current life. I will introduce you to magnificent Venetian buildings coexisting with memorials of the Ottoman era and canonical Orthodox churches. The residents of Crete managed to organically merge relics of different cultures so harmoniously that harmony and architectural integrity have become distinctive features of Chania.
Venetian and Ottoman heritage of the city
- You will walk through Eleftherios Venizelos Square, better known as Syntrivani, see the Church of the Three Martyrs, and the city market from the early 20th century, executed in the form of an Orthodox cross.
- Observe the Firka Fortress, which was used as a flag during changes of power but remained almost untouched.
- Visit the Leather Lane, where every product from wallets to boots is handcrafted by local artisans.
- We will not bypass the landmarks of the Turkish era: on the way, you will encounter ancient Turkish baths with round domes (now functioning as a showroom for the Greek fashion legislator Ioanna Kourbela), the famous Turkish Yiali Mosque, where during the times of Turkish rule, prisoners and underage Greeks were forcibly converted to Islam.
- And many other equally memorable anchor points that will remain in your memory for a long time.
Sea sunset at the lighthouse
A magical end to our walk will be the enchanting sunset that you will see from the viewing platform of the operating Egyptian Lighthouse. Just like the city's defenders many centuries ago, we will enjoy the mesmerizing views of the tired evening sea.
