About this experience
I am often asked whether it is worth visiting the Knossos Palace, and I unequivocally answer - yes! Remember the myths about the Labyrinth of the Minotaur? There are versions that it was the palace of the legendary King Minos, which, in its reconstructed form, I invite you to explore. In addition to mythological riddles, Knossos is valuable as an example of astonishing engineering and architecture of its time. This structure is a bridge to the ancient European civilization at the peak of its prosperity and greatness, and without it, the idea of Crete's heritage would be incomplete.
What to expect
Main palace of the Minoan civilization
In 5 km to the south of Heraklion, there is the reconstructed palace of Knossos - a structure with a complex plan, which became a reason for comparing it to a labyrinth. I will tell you about the Minoan civilization, which was considered mythical for a long time, about the discovery of the famous archaeologist Arthur Evans, and the city of Knossos - an influential political center in the Mediterranean. On the excursion around the palace grounds (if desired) a local guide - a professional historian will accompany you. You will see one of the first examples in human history of multi-storey buildings construction and communication systems - with water supply, sewage, and ventilation shafts. You will learn about methods of natural and artificial lighting, heating, as well as about the oldest road in Europe. Mythological stories will also be featured - you will hear about ancient Greek characters: the creator of the labyrinth Daedalus, the Cretan monster Minotaur, and Theseus who defeated him.
On the way to Heraklion...
After exploring the secrets of the palace, you will head to the capital, and on the way, you will stop at the bastion of the Venetian fortress Rocca al Mare and climb the fortress walls from the 15th century AD, from where you can admire the azure blue of the Aegean Sea and the Venetian marina. Strangely enough, these two places are connected back to the times of the Venetians - you will find out which exactly on the excursion.
Architecture and gastronomy of the capital
In Heraklion, I will introduce you to the world of Cretan flavors and aromas: at authentic markets, unique shops, and cafes, you will taste the local 'liquid gold' - olive oil, several types of traditional cheeses, the alcoholic drink raki, olives, and other products essential to the island's gastronomic culture. In the port area, you will explore ancient fortresses and churches, and in secret courtyards, I will tell you about the subtleties of the Cretan mentality, culture, and traditions. The walk will end in a famous tavern with the best view of the harbor, where I will help you navigate through the variety of national dishes. And a pleasant surprise awaits you at the end!
