About this experience
We will embark on a bright journey around the high-mountain Lake Sevan. Part of the route repeats the famous Silk Road. You will see incredible landscapes, learn the secrets of medieval caravans, and discover the history of Armenian sailors. Additionally, if desired, you can dive into the crystal-clear waters of Sevan and taste the freshest sig fish cooked on coals.
What to Expect
Berdkunk fortress ruins from the Bronze Age
The fortress played an important role during the Urartu kingdom era. It had a powerful inner citadel and external fortress walls. During the last expedition, an underground passage leading directly to the lake and many stone anchors were discovered.
Medieval monastery of Hayravank
Among the monastery ruins, you will see the 9th-century Church of Saint Stephanos, majestically perched on a rocky cliff overlooking the lake.
Noratus village with khachkars
Not far from the narrowest point of Sevan lies the village of Noratus. It is believed to have the largest collection of unique khachkars from the 9th to 17th centuries. You will learn about the symbolism and decoration of these stone crosses.
Sailing ship 'Cilicia'
In 1989, a team of Armenian like-minded individuals began building a sailing ship based on the drawings of Cilician seafarers from the 13th century. In 2004, the ship made its first voyage in the Mediterranean Sea. Currently, it stands at Cape Artanish, where you can admire it.
Fish shop-restaurant
You will discover the gifts provided by the lake and taste fresh sig fish cooked on coals. Optionally, before or after lunch, you can swim at one of the beaches we will pass by.
Sevanavank Monastery
Founded in the 4th century by Armenia's enlightener St. Gregory the Illuminator. Two domed churches from 874 have survived. You will learn how they are connected to Princess Mariam Bagratuni's vow to commemorate her husband who fell in battle against the Arab Caliphate.
