About this experience
Embark on a trip to the mountainous region of Khizi and witness the cosmic landscapes of colorful mountains. Learn about the history of these places which served as a trading post on the legendary caravan route. Explore ancient fortresses, sacred sites, and the amazing pink lake. Immerse yourself in the legends of Khizi region's past and ancient folk magic, taste local cuisine, and experience the warmth of Azerbaijani hospitality.
What to Expect
The nearest mountainous region of Azerbaijan, Khizi, is just 104 km away from Baku. During the excursion, you will visit the filming locations of a famous Soviet movie (let's guess the title together), explore and even perform two ancient magical folk rituals. If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the 'Doctor Aybolit' hospital. You will taste delicious goat meat and sturgeon shawarma.
Original Natural Landscapes
The road to Khizi will reveal a stunningly beautiful landscape created by unique geological phenomena. It is said that a similar hue can only be found in the Death Valley in the USA. You will pass through a road surrounded by the golden-red Sarafat ridge and encounter the most expressive natural monument in Khizi - the Beshbarmag Rock, surrounded by many legends and myths. You will also learn about the beliefs associated with 'Khidir Zinda' - a place of worship at the mountain's summit.
Historical Heritage of Altıağaç
During the Shirvanshah era, a road was built for camel caravans passing through Altıağaç from Shamakhi to Guba, and it served as a stopover. The region is rich in history and ancient monuments, so besides the natural beauty, this journey will unveil many new insights into Azerbaijan's past beyond Baku. You will see the 8th-century Beshbarmag Tower, the house-museum of the founder of Azerbaijani drama Jafar Jabbarly. Along the way, we will discuss the legendary Silk Road, pre-Islamic fire-worshipper traditions, and even the 12th Legion of the Roman Empire, which, according to some theories, visited this area.
The Pink Lake and Jeyranbatan Reservoir
You will learn the history of Masazirgil and the reservoir and understand why the lake water appears unnaturally pink (especially in summer, under the influence of sunlight). To witness this amazing property, you can collect water in a separate vessel, as many travelers do, and compare it with the color of the lake water. I will share a romantic legend about love closely connected to the Absheron Peninsula and then help you take enchanting photos with these natural wonders: the lake is elegantly lined with a white belt of salt, and the reservoir is surrounded by green rows of plantations, creating an incredible sight in photos!
Memorable Souvenir
As a souvenir, you can take salt from the Dead (Purple) Lake Masazir or a piece of agate from Khizi mountains - a talisman against troubles on the road. Previously, seafarers used to take such an amulet with them; today, it is hung in the car cabin. We will also collect fresh spring water from a spring and, if desired, have a delicious lunch in a forest grove with the tastiest dishes of meat (goat meat, lamb, veal, chicken, turkey) and vegetables, the recipes of which are kept secret by the locals.
