What to Expect
A Walk through the Waves of History
Thessaloniki is over two thousand years old, but by Greek standards, it can be considered young. On this walk, you will learn how it happened that from the very foundation of the city, unlike many other parts of the country, life here was constantly bustling. You will get acquainted with ancient Roman monuments, Byzantine temples, and Ottoman Empire buildings. You will learn about the pivotal and fateful moments of the city. I will also tell you about the ethno-confessional mosaic of Thessaloniki, where a hundred years ago only a third of the population were Orthodox Greeks, while the rest were Jews and Muslims.
Thessaloniki's Landmarks
You will visit the main Aristotle Square and the 7th-century Church of St. Sophia, which is a small copy of the homonymous church in Istanbul. Stroll along the promenade and see Thessaloniki's symbol - the White Tower. Here you will also see several modern monuments and can take interesting photos. You will pass by the main monuments of the Roman era - the Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda. And then, if desired, you can head to the observation deck along the ancient fortress wall.
The City's Modern Life
Thessaloniki remains one of the largest cities in Greece, and besides delving into the past, you will get to know its youthful side. Over a cup of aromatic coffee in old Turkish baths, where today a picturesque cafe is located, we will talk about the boundless Greek love for coffee breaks. You will learn about the Thessalonians of our time, their traditions, way of life, and values, and understand who they are - the modern Hellenes.
