About this experience
Wapping is a side of London you are not familiar with. Once a bustling area full of ships, Wapping is now a quiet non-touristy district. We will walk past warehouses converted into homes, to docks and pubs that remember legends of pirates, long voyages, and mutinies. We will talk about the tunnel under the river, see the place of execution for maritime criminals, and discuss how to sail to China through Muscovy.
What to Expect
- Wapping Overground Station: This underground segment was the first tunnel under the river in history. I will tell you about the nuances of its construction.
- Execution Dock: Where maritime criminals were executed - smugglers, mutineers, pirates, the most famous of whom was Captain Kidd.
- Memorial Garden Hermitage Riverside: Preserving the memory of the bombings of London by Nazi Germany. You will learn how the district lived before the 20th century and how it was rebuilt after two world wars.
- St. Katharine Docks: You will get acquainted with their history and some artifacts that have been preserved here.
- Former office of News International: A year-long battle between unions and media magnate Rupert Murdoch, who changed the print industry, took place at its walls.
- Tobacco Dock: Let's discuss why it has such high walls, what a tiger does here, and what is notable about the two merchant ships in front of the dock.
- Captain Bligh's House: Who undertook to deliver tree saplings from Tahiti to the West Indies. But something went wrong... This story involves love and mutiny on a ship with a chocolatey name - you will learn how it ended for all involved.
- London's Oldest Pub: Where Sir Hugh Willoughby's trading expedition to China through Muscovy began. Pirates, English politicians, and members of the royal family have visited the pub before us.
