About this experience
A castle whose beauty cost its owner his life. A model of architectural elegance and harmony. One of the rare castles in France completely open to visitors. All this is about Vaux-le-Vicomte, the 17th-century estate of the Minister of Finance Nicolas Fouquet. You will learn about the twists of fate of the castle, explore its interiors that rival Versailles, and appreciate its modern life.
What to Expect
Vaux-le-Vicomte from Louis XIV to Leonardo DiCaprio
Why was the castle a revolutionary project in the 17th century? Why did it become a 'thorn in the side' of Louis, the Sun King? You will trace the history of the estate and learn about the tragic fate of its owner, the financial ruler of France, Nicolas Fouquet. As you stroll through the palace halls and gardens, we will talk about the dream of one man, who attracted three titans of his time to bring it to life: architect Le Vau, gardener Le Nôtre, and artist Le Brun. We will also remember the movies filmed here, including 'The Man in the Iron Mask'.
Authentic Interiors
The castle's owners, representatives of the ancient de Vogüé family, preserve it as it was during Fouquet's time, often holding costumed performances and even putting wax figures of people for ambiance. We will tour the stables, carriage collection, two floors of the palace, climb to the roof of the main dome. You will admire the painted ceilings, furniture, and tapestries from the 17th century, peek into the library, Nicolas Fouquet's and Louis XIV’s apartments, while I decipher what you see.
Regal Leisure
In the summer season, from early May to early October, at Vaux-le-Vicomte, you can have a picnic, dress up in princess and musketeer costumes for photos, and enjoy the 'evening of a thousand candles' – they light them in the park, turning off the electric lights. And at Christmas, a magical fairy tale awaits you: the castle is adorned with sparkling Christmas trees and decorations.
