About this experience
Yerevan Airport "Zvartnots" is named after a grandiose 7th-century structure located a few kilometers away. I suggest combining the transfer with an excursion to the museum-preserve. You will explore the ruins of the cathedral, learn about its architecture, uncover the symbolism on the structure's fragments, and appreciate the monument's value in Armenia's historical heritage.
What to expect
I will meet you with a sign at the airport, conduct an excursion, and drive you to a hotel in Yerevan. The reverse order is also possible.
You will visit the ruins of the ancient Angels of Heaven cathedral. It was consecrated in 652 AD, with the Byzantine Emperor Constant II attending the ceremony. Zvartnots aimed to be the largest Christian cathedral in Armenia and the second largest in the world after the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. An earthquake in the 10th century destroyed the monument, but its ruins remain impressive to this day.
During the excursion, you will learn about the ups and downs of the confrontation between the Byzantine Empire and the Arab Caliphate. You will discover the main purpose of the Byzantine emperor's visit to Armenia. Together, we will try to decipher the anagrams on the columns' capitals. I will talk about the main trends and techniques of early medieval Armenian cathedral architecture and many other interesting facts!
