About this experience
The soul of the city and its vivid history are encapsulated in the mosques of Baku—some were destroyed and reborn from the ashes like a phoenix, others stood empty for a long time, while some were built very recently. You will visit the Bibi-Heybat, Tazepir, and Heydar mosques, symbolizing three epochs of Azerbaijan, and discover the elegant Eastern architecture, Islamic traditions, and the stories behind the creation of these iconic structures in Baku.
What to Expect
Bibi-Heybat Mosque Stories
Your introduction to Eastern mosques will begin with a visit to the oldest and most beautiful mosque on our route—Bibi-Heybat, towering on the shores of the Caspian Sea since the 13th century. You will hear the history of the mosque's construction, uncover the secret of its name, and enjoy a wonderful view of Baku's 'oil artery'—the Bibi-Heybat Bay. I will talk about the project which once was only surpassed in scale by the Panama Canal but is now comparable to the Palm Islands of Dubai. And afterwards, if you wish, we can relax and have lunch by the sea at one of the best fish restaurants in Baku.
TezePir Mosque Architecture and Interior
In the TezePir Mosque, built at the beginning of the 20th century, you will admire the incredible decor and interior finishings, as only in this Baku mosque can you see minarets covered in gold. I will share about the construction of this iconic structure and how the mosque often changed its purpose, then we will stroll through the luxurious TezePir grounds and appreciate the elegance of Eastern architectural forms.
Heydar Mosque—Religious Symbol of Modern Baku
The crowning jewel of our tour will be a visit to the most beautiful and monumental of all Azerbaijani mosques—the modern Heydar Mosque, which will impress you with its grandeur and perfection of forms and proportions. You will discover the architectural possibilities of the 21st century and the traditions of Eastern architecture used in the mosque's construction, noting the impressive details of its white lace-like facade.
