About this experience
During this two-hour experience, we will walk through the Lavapiés neighborhood. Here, in the quirky street names, churches, bars, and buildings, the murals of 'street artists,' avant-garde art, and a 500-year history come together. You will learn why graffiti and street art are not the same during the tour. Afterwards, you will look at the writings and drawings on city streets in a whole new way.
What to Expect
Over the past 20 years, Madrid's Lavapiés neighborhood has been undergoing gentrification. Known for its street art festivals, murals, creative shops, and bars, this area also boasts a 500-year history and is home to immigrants from over 80 countries. In 2018, Time Out magazine recognized it as the 'coolest' neighborhood in the world, but this didn't make the residents very happy. Why? Find out on the tour! Our program includes:
- We will start our walk at La Latina Square, stroll along Embajadores Street famous for its murals, street art, and graffiti. We will discuss street art, styles, and vandalism.
- Then we will head to Lavapiés Square. I will tell you about the history of the name, why the residents are called 'manolos,' and how the 'communal apartments' in Madrid looked. You will also learn about the only 'church' for atheists in Spain and the oldest bar in Madrid.
- We will finish our journey near the former tobacco factory 'Tabacalera,' whose walls 'participate' in an international street art project every two years.
