Riga is recognized as the capital of Art Nouveau. At the beginning of the last century, around 800 buildings were constructed in this style here, setting a world record. Strolling through the Old and New Riga, you will see the works of the best local Art Nouveau architects: Eisenstein, Vanags, Pekshens, and Bokslafs. I will be your guide through the magical world of beauty, taste, elegance, and fantasy.
What to Expect
Top Art Nouveau Buildings
We will start the tour in the Old Riga. You will find on one of the facades a reading boy and a cunning fox. Explore the first Art Nouveau building in the city, the House of Adam and Eve, the Cat House, and others. Then we will head to New Riga - a real open-air Art Nouveau museum. You will appreciate the architecture of the famous Alberta Street and enjoy two parks along the way: at the Bastion Hill and Esplanade. You will also take photos on a picturesque bridge over the city canal.
Art Nouveau Through the Ages
You will get acquainted with the symbolism of Art Nouveau and its various directions: eclectic-decorative, national romanticism, and others. You will uncover how architects used decorative elements on the facades of buildings to tell about the twists of their personal lives and communicate with opponents. You will learn how Art Nouveau emerged, what led to its appearance, in which countries it spread, and how it developed in Riga.
