About this experience
Notre-Dame de la Garde on the hill is one of the most mysterious places in the city. You will learn about the miracles that happen in the basilica and admire the view of Marseille from above. Understand why the church is two-tiered and why there is nothing like it elsewhere in Europe. Appreciate the impressive interior decoration and find out the connection between Notre-Dame de la Garde and the prison.
What to expect
Inside Notre-Dame de la Garde
You will become acquainted with the luxurious interiors of the basilica. Optionally, you can light candles for your loved ones and buy souvenirs in the local shop, the assortment of which differs from others in the city.
Stories and miracles
I will tell you how people lived and what they did on this hill, and what led to the appearance of the first church here. I will explain why the architect changed the project and whose memory he wanted to perpetuate. You will learn about the miracles that happened here with the believers and who saved the basilica and Marseille during World War II. And I will also reveal what Notre-Dame de la Garde and Chateau d'If - the dreadful prison - have in common.
Views of Marseille on the way to the basilica
Depending on the chosen mode of transportation to the basilica (by bus, train, or car), our path will take us along the picturesque Corniche waterfront or the residential districts of Marseille. Along the waterfront, I will show you the beach from where Edmond Dantes was taken to the prison, and the Frioul Islands. I will also tell you a story shared with me by the lighthouse keeper's son. If we go through the neighborhoods, you will see non-touristic streets of Marseille where the everyday life of the city's residents unfolds.
