About this experience
In the 19th century, Dickens described Soho as a place of contagious freedom. Since then, little has changed. People come here to have fun. And also visit iconic (and often shady) places, where 'Beatlemania' and the passion for mini-skirts, the Communist Party manifesto, and the first novel about vampires emerged. In Soho, Puritan England lost its innocence - let's discuss how it happened.
What to expect
- We will visit the Palladium Theatre, where The Beatles gave their first London concert, and the Scene club in Ham Yard, where Rolling Stones and The Who started out.
- We will walk along Carnaby Street, where the 'swinging' 1960s originated.
- We will stroll through the red light district, where naked table dances began - a common thing for Europe and the USA, nonsense for Puritan England.
- We will explore authentic venues in Chinatown and immerse ourselves in London's Chinese culture.
You will learn:
- Where Marx and Engels conceived the Communist Party manifesto
- Where John Polidori wrote the first vampire novel in history and why he quarreled with Byron
- Which atelier The Beatles used to tailor their suits
- Why there were traffic jams in front of Lady Jane boutique on Carnaby Street
- How John Snow saved the city from cholera by defeating the Great Stink
- Who is depicted on the cult mural 'Soho Spirit'
- How the Murder Act passed in the mid-18th century led to 'body snatching'
- How surgeons performed operations in the anatomical theatre on Great Windmill Street
And much more!
