About this experience
This is the only thing Hanover can boast about," said Electress Sophia more than 300 years ago. And even today, the Herrenhausen Gardens remain one of the most important attractions of our city. Their uniqueness lies in the fact that they are gardens, not just a garden. This means you will have a rare opportunity to see all styles of European garden art from the 16th-19th centuries. And I will immerse you in their history.
What to expect
Herrenhausen Gardens, or Royal Gardens
- Founded in 1666, Berggarten, one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe, was supplying pineapples to the royal table as early as 1686. Today, it delights its visitors with colorful rhododendrons, delicate orchids, and tender tropical plants.
- The magnificent Great Garden - a masterpiece of French Baroque with fountains, a maze, and a garden theater (the oldest in Europe still in operation to this day!). By the way, the Great Fountain itself, reaching a height of 80 m in calm weather, is a European record. The pump system was designed by the great Leibniz. This was the summer residence of the Hanoverian rulers, where in 1713 83-year-old Sophia opened a polonaise with the young Peter the Great.
- And finally, the youngest of all (19th century), Georgengarten, will delight lovers of English park art. You can wander for hours in the magnificent landscaped park with majestic trees, and the famous lime tree alley 2 km long (1300 lime trees!) - one of the most beautiful views of Hanover.
