About this experience
Sometimes, to rise above the city hustle, all you need to do is climb a roof! The roofs of Funchal are always charming, positive, pleasing to the eye with warm colors in any weather, and their intricate or simple forms and structures. You will ascend to the most impressive roofs of the city, take a fresh look at familiar sights from new perspectives, and surely succumb to the charm of Funchal, listening to live music at a rooftop cafe with a cup of hot coffee.
What to Expect
Funchal Contrasts from Rooftops
I will guide you through my favorite roofs that showcase the diversity of Funchal. You will visit a gallery and the unique roof of the Jesuit College Church, impressive both from the outside and inside. Ascend to the roof of the tallest house in the Old Town, the best spot for breathtaking panoramic views of Funchal! Peek at the embroidery factory's roof (Madeira has always been renowned for its skilled embroiderers) and admire the luxurious ocean view from the parking rooftop. And to conclude our walk – enjoy great coffee at a rooftop restaurant with a welcome cocktail and excellent jazz.
Architectural Kaleidoscope of the Island
From the island's roofs, you can clearly see all three city centers, its urban planning, and architecture. I will tell you about the similarities between the decorative elements of Funchal's roofs and those of St. Petersburg, why Portugal's coat of arms, fountains, and cathedrals are adorned with an astronomical instrument, how the roofs are used in islanders' homes, and much more! And, of course, we will discuss Funchal's architecture: its styles, traditions, and novelty.
