What to Expect
A Place where European History was Made
We will explore the resort town of Bad Ischl, where the Habsburg family still resides to this day. You will see the Imperial Villa where the beginning of World War I was announced, learn about its current inhabitants - the heir to the throne, Archduke Markus von Habsburg, great-grandson of Franz Joseph and Sisi, and his family. And of course, we will talk about imperial Austria, the history of the Habsburgs, as well as the Austrian aristocracy and bohemians who have been attracted to the landscapes of Salzkammergut for centuries.
Beauty of the Lakes District
You will appreciate the stunning panoramas of Fuschlsee Lake, see nearby the mansion of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Third Reich Ribbentrop, the main office of Red Bull company, and the hunting residences of the Salzburg princes. I will tell you about salt mining in these places - from the Celts to modern times - and its influence on the region's life. Then we will make a stop at the magnificent viewpoint of Wolfgangsee Lake and explore the surrounding villages. In Sankt Gilgen, the 'Mozart Village', we will talk about the family of the genius composer. And in the pilgrimage village of Sankt Wolfgang, we will visit the famous church of the same name, which according to legend was built by the devil and consecrated by Bishop Wolfgang.
Immersing in Austrian Culture
In the Lakes District, the traditions of the native Austrians - hunters, fishermen, craftsmen, and farmers - have been preserved almost in their original form. In the villages of Salzkammergut, I will tell you about Austrian cuisine and hunting, rural life, festivals, and even the peculiarities of mushroom picking.
