Nothing lasts forever. Frozen cabins of Chiatura and Tskaltubo sanatoriums
About this experience
During the trip, you will immerse yourself in the past and get to know two completely different cities, but with a similar fate. One was a thriving resort, a symbol of success and privilege. The other survived the glory of a famous mining town, to which a golden future was predicted. Now they are both known as ghost towns. Let's touch the past and feel the special atmosphere of these places.
What to expect
Tskaltubo: labyrinths of forgotten Soviet architecture grandeur
The history of the city dates back to the Middle Ages. Even ancient chroniclers noted its importance - as it healed the warriors of Queen Tamar's springs. We will delve into the legends and history of this period, as well as the boom during the Soviet era and the decline in the 90s.
Special attention will be paid to the architecture of Tskaltubo, which significantly differs from typical Soviet buildings. Here you can find the style of classical Greek architecture and art deco elements.
Buildings partially absorbed by nature, this is a popular place for filming and photoshoots.
You will see:
- Legends Tskaltubo Spa Resort sanatorium
- baths No. 6 and No. 8
- Metallurg sanatorium
Chiatura: rocky sanctuaries, cable cars, and industrial echoes
This city is the opposite of Soviet luxury and relaxation. You will learn about the history of Chiatura, starting from the birth of industrial manganese mining in the region. I will tell you why a bright future was foreseen for it and what went wrong. You will learn about the famous network of cable cars connecting the village with the mountain mines. And you will be transported to the present, traveling on modern suspension roads.
Frozen cabins, exploded mountain, abandoned machinery, and nature trying to take it all back. You can observe this struggle and philosophize from the top tier of the monastery carved into the rock nearby.
You will see:
- Soviet cable car stations built in the 60s
- Pioneers' Palace on the mountain with a magnificent view of the city
- Chiatura Stadium, an impressive architecture of an old sports complex
- abandoned train depot
- Medieval monastery Mgvimevi
- Katskhi Pillar, a church on top of a mountain monolith built between the 6th and 8th centuries
