About this experience
Embark on a journey to one of the most colorful neighborhoods in the city, once the birthplace of the unique musical genre of fado. Here you will encounter true Lisbon locals, admire the whimsically intertwined building facades, and uncover the intriguing history of a district that has successfully transformed from a criminal hub into a delightful living space.
What to expect
Soulful Lisbon
We will wander through one of the oldest and most ambiguous districts in the Portuguese capital. Here, you won't find the tourist rush or world-famous museums, but it's where you can truly feel the spirit and touch the special charm of authentic Lisbon. Here, you will meet the 'alfacinhas,' the true Lisbon natives. And, of course, we will delve into the unique musical genre of fado, which once originated on these very streets.
A world within a district
Mouraria is a district where locals have forged an amazing symbiosis with immigrants from around the globe. During our stroll, we will discuss how traditions are born. It was from these quarters that the 'Portuguese Mudejar' decor emerged, melding European and Islamic artistic traits, which you will spot on some house facades. On the tour, you will learn about the outcome of the local contemporary art festival, explore the open-air photo gallery, witness earthquake-resilient houses, and behold the most beautiful azulejo-adorned house in Lisbon.
