About this experience
Thessaly Valley is a name known from early childhood when we, reading the myths of Ancient Greece, imagined ourselves as the heroes of these captivating stories. Surrounded by mountains in the middle of the valley are incredibly beautiful rocks, the tops of which end with monasteries. This picture will stun the eye and imagination, as the titanic work put into this creation could only be sustained by the strength of spirit and faith.
Monasteries
The first monastery (Transfiguration or Great Meteora) in the valley was built in 1340. Its founder was Athanasius Meteorite, who actually gave the name to the entire complex. Of the 24 monasteries, only 6 have survived:
- Transfiguration Monastery (Great Meteors);
- Varlaam Monastery;
- Roussanou or St. Barbara;
- Holy Trinity;
- St. Stephen;
- Nicholas Anapafsas.
If you wish, you can visit all the monasteries, but do not forget that there is a certain schedule for receiving pilgrims and tourists, which varies in winter and summer periods. To clarify this information, I advise you to contact me in advance.
Program
You won't be bored on the way, as I will tell you about Greece and the Greeks, about the places along which our route will pass. Namely, this is the legendary Mount Olympus, where the Olympic gods lived, we will also stop in the Tembi Gorge at the source of St. Paraskevi (a place interesting not only from a pilgrimage mission, but also because many events described in Greek myths are associated with this gorge).
We will stop at scenic viewpoints, I will gladly suggest good angles for you, and if you don't have a camera with you, I can take photos with mine, which I always carry with me, and then send them to your email as a gift.
After visiting Meteora, the return home is planned along the Egnatia route (picturesque landscapes, tunnels, narration about the historical significance of this road).
