Temazcal is one of the most important and ancient elements of Mesoamerican culture. It is a key to understanding the relationship of pre-Columbian civilizations with nature and a way to discover how people maintained harmony in their world by connecting with it. By undergoing the ceremony, you will touch sacred traditions and explore a new way of rebirth.
What to Expect
Introduction to Ancient Practice
We will pick you up at your hotel and head to a Mayan village where you will get acquainted with the daily life of its inhabitants and visit stunning cenotes. Then, preparations for the ceremony will begin under the guidance of a local shaman. The rules of conducting Temazcal have been developed over millennia and have a specific sequence of actions, the meaning of which you will learn on the spot. After connecting with the forces of nature and the cardinal directions, and after the burning of tree resin, the shaman will lead you into a special dome-shaped room where you will sit in a circle and prepare for a deep cleansing procedure. With the help of hot stones, the temperature will rise slightly above 50 degrees, leading to a light meditative state. The final stage will be bathing in a cool spring.
To conclude, a traditional dinner will be prepared for you, after which it will be time to head back.
Organizational Details
- Lunch and transfers are included in the trip price.
- We will pick you up from hotels in the Riviera Maya and Cancun and drop you off after the excursion.
- Collection time is from 16:00 to 18:00 depending on the hotel location. The tour runs from 18:00 to 21:00 and ends approximately from 21:00 to 23:00.
- Attention! Our ceremony is not a religious act.
- Small children and tourists with serious back problems are not accepted on the tour.
- People under the influence of alcohol or psychotropic drugs are not allowed on the tour.
- Pregnant women are advised to consult a doctor.
- What to bring: mosquito repellent, a set of dry clothes, comfortable shoes, towel, photo/video camera, money for souvenirs and tips.
