About this experience
The Old Pinakothek in Munich is a unique collection of European paintings from the Middle Ages to the mid-18th century. We invite you on a journey through the paintings and the destinies of their great authors: Raphael and Titian, Rubens and Van Dyck, El Greco and Murillo. Let's talk about their outstanding skill, breakthroughs and discoveries, as well as the symbols and codes hidden in the canvases.
What to expect
- Northern Renaissance. You will see paintings by great Flemish artists of the 15th century: Rogier van der Weyden, Hans Memling, Jan Gossaert. You will try to decipher the messages of Albrecht Dürer, encrypted in his 'Self-Portrait' and 'Four Apostles'. We will discuss the adventures of these paintings, as well as the amazing insights of the Renaissance painters.
- Italian Renaissance. Before you will appear Raphael, Botticelli, Filippo Lippi, Titian, and Tintoretto. You will see the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci with a note in Germany - 'Madonna of the Carnation'. You will understand the concept of 'Venetian colorism' and realize the influence it had on the history of world painting.
- Dutch painting of the 17th century. The Old Pinakothek boasts an impressive collection of paintings by Peter Paul Rubens. We will talk about him and his great contemporaries - Van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Jan Brueghel. We will thoroughly discuss Rembrandt who was working at the same time. You will learn why the secret of Rembrandt's painting was only deciphered in the 20th century, and what it consists of.
- Spanish painting. Let's start our conversation with the forerunner of modernism - the Spanish genius El Greco, whose unique style irreversibly influenced all Western art. Let's discuss the creator of a new type of Spanish painting, Murillo - you will learn why he sold his paintings only abroad. In the Old Pinakothek, there are a total of five of his works.
- French Rococo. We will understand how the world of brilliant Rococo originated, what made it so mesmerizing and irresistibly attracted artists. You will find out what the paintings of Boucher and Fragonard narrate, and explain yourself why they look so relevant today.
