About this experience
I will show you the most beautiful squares, churches, bridges, and fountains of Lyon. I will tell you about the city's formation, periods of its ups and downs, emperors, and kings. About Lyonnaise cuisine, French wines, and the peculiarities of local life. And most importantly - I will help you feel the fairytale and slightly mysterious atmosphere of the evening city!
What to expect
Ancient churches of the Presquile district
Our walk will begin at the church of St. Bonaventure, located in the picturesque Presquile district. Through ancient streets lined with imposing Renaissance houses, you will reach another sanctuary - Saint-Nizier. Built in the 5th century on the site of ruins of an ancient Roman temple, it is dedicated to the god Attis. I will explain why the church has two different steeples and tell you about the martyrs buried in it. Next, we will stroll along the narrow Rue de la Plené, where you will feel the atmosphere of a historical movie and learn about the most famous dish of the restaurant "Le Lion de Lyon".
Frescoes and the 'Brotherhood of the Poor'
On the small Place des Minimes, you will hear about the 'Brotherhood of the Poor of Lyon' and see the ruins of a 12th-century Roman chapel and a fountain erected in honor of a local benefactor. And on Rue Platière, you'll enter the realm of frescoes! I will explain which organization is responsible for them appearing on the walls of once faceless facades and help decipher the main plots. Next, you will walk along the picturesque Quai Saint-Vincent, admire the homonymous church, towering on the hill - the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, and the amazing fresco 'Famous Residents of Lyon'.
Lyon through the centuries
The cozy Place Saint-Jean will charm you with its shady terraces and charming restaurants. It's time to continue the walk: along Rue Martinier, you will reach the concert hall La Ramée and descend to Place des Terreaux, where you'll see Fountain Bartholdi and the Museum of Fine Arts in the former Benedictine monastery. Then, you will admire the town hall, the unusual roof of the Lyon Opera building, and the 19th-century 'Puppet Clocks'. Also, visit the Place des Jacobins with a fountain monument depicting sculptures of four famous citizens.
The Magic of the Evening Riverside
On France's most beautiful square - Place Bellecour - I will tell you why it changed its name six times and show you the equestrian statue of Louis XIV and the Exupery Monument. Finally, you will walk along the banks of the Rhône River, breathe in the fresh river air, and enjoy the city in the light of the evening lights.
