About this experience
English-speaking guides call Leuven the most Flemish city in Belgium. Here you will see one of Europe's most interesting town halls, hear the captivating story of the library of the oldest university in Benelux, learn about the lives of local students, and even try your hand at playing the carillon, an instrument for bell ringing.
What to expect
Leuven is an underrated gem. While all tourists flock to Bruges and Ghent, they unjustly overlook this city just 30 km away from Brussels (a 23-minute train ride). Come and see one of Europe's most remarkable town halls, discover the fascinating history of the Leuven University Library, the oldest educational institution in Benelux, and learn about Leuven's connections with the English army, US presidents, the Kievskiy Railway Station in Moscow, and Stella Artois beer.
You will witness how local students live, hear the Leuven 'curfew' bells, and perhaps even attempt to play the carillon - a European bell instrument (playing the carillon is prohibited during exam time). I will tell you about the beguines and why the houses of these women have been preserved almost exclusively in Belgium, including Leuven. You will also learn what can happen in the city if students decide to eat 129 ice cream cones in two hours.
