What to expect
Exploring Ghent with depth, insight, and poise
I come from a family with deep roots dating back to the 15th century, constantly enriching my cultural knowledge. Feel free to ask me any questions about Flemish life and the city's history - rest assured that you will receive authentic answers. That's the essence of our tour!
Our journey begins at the Saint Bavo's Cathedral, where you will see the Ghent Altarpiece and the brushes of the Van Eyck brothers amidst the mystical story of its creation and the 600-year legacy.
We will then admire the Belfry of Ghent - the tallest in Belgium - and the adjacent weaving rows.
Next, we will visit the 16th-century town hall and walk through Emile Braun Square to reach the Masons' Guild House - where I will share my personal research findings about the activities of its members.
Crossing the ornate Saint Michael's Bridge, you will traverse the Leie River, admiring its bends and marveling at the tragic and comedic moments of the city's use of its waters.
One highlight we cannot miss is the 15th-century Meat Market. Here, you will discover the nuances of Flemish cuisine and gain a better understanding of Belgian taste preferences.
After a light tasting at the market, we will stroll along the Grain House, once one of the last almshouses in Europe. I will speak about the character of the Patershol district, its former inhabitants, and the modern status of this place.
And we will conclude the tour at the magnificent Friday Market - a witness to bloody scenes, political triumphs, financial highs, and lows.
