About this experience
Author's tour to the Kulen Plateau, the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire, is a historical adventure with elements of mysticism and shamanism. You will visit the Preah Ang Thom monastery, where I will tell you about Khmer Buddhism; discover the sacred symbolism of the River of a Thousand Lingas, where the Emperor was crowned; visit a fortune teller in the jungles and learn what the forest shaman trades. You will also swim in one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Cambodia, taste coffee with the hostess's secret recipe, and visit several authentic villages each with their own craft.
What to expect
Colorful villages and discussions about the ancient Khmers
During the hour and a half journey to the plateau, you will visit unique villages where palm sugar is made, palm jam is cooked, and homemade rice noodles are produced. Along the way, I will talk about the history of the Khmer Empire, nuances of life and functioning of society. We will also discuss 20th-century Cambodia, in particular the infamous 'Khmer Rouge' - you will learn about colonial and revolutionary periods, and understand the background of the dramatic events, some of which took place right where you will go.
Khmer Buddhism and the 'living water' of the River of a Thousand Lingas
In the 16th-century monastery Preah Ang Thom, you will learn about modern Khmer Buddhist rituals and see an 8-meter-long reclining Buddha statue carved from a monolith. Next to the River of a Thousand Lingas - Kbal Spean - you will study the preserved reliefs, discover the symbols depicted on the stream bed, find out its source, and learn how this place is connected to ancient Khmer beliefs about the creation of the world. We will also talk about the reasons why the Emperor was crowned here and the ritual of transforming water into a life-giving substance.
Waterfall and meeting mystics in the jungle
After all the discoveries, you can dive into a 25-meter waterfall. Then I will introduce you to a hermit who helps to see into the future. I will tell you about other local mystics and explain the symbolism of the products offered here for rituals and magic. You will learn about Khmer medicine by visiting the herb shop, and also taste incredible coffee - the hostess keeps the recipe secret but does not refuse an extra portion.
